What is the first thing the Bible shows us about God?

Read the first page of the Bible slowly and you notice God doing one thing again and again. He speaks.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Then we watch the method up close: “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3). There is no gap between the word and the world. He says light, and there is light. He says sky, and there is sky. Waters gather, dry land comes up, plants push out of the ground, and each one stands exactly where His voice put it. Six times the writer stops the action to tell us God looked at what His speaking had made and found it good.

Think of an ordinary morning: a hand fumbling for the lamp switch before the day has properly started. Our word for light is a reach across the desk for a switch somebody else wired. His word for light was the light itself.

What does Genesis 1 mean for your life today?

Here is the lift for today. The very first thing Genesis wants you to know about God is that He speaks, and what He speaks is so. That is the bedrock the rest of the Bible is built on, and it is the bedrock your own life is standing on right now. When God says something over you, it holds. It carries its own weight. It does what it says it will do.

How does Genesis 1 connect to Jesus?

John reaches all the way back to this page. He opens his Gospel with the same three words, in the beginning, and tells us the Word who was with God is the one through whom every created thing came to be. That Word put on skin and bone and walked around in it, and His name is Jesus. So the voice that said “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3) is His voice. And Paul says the God who first spoke light into the dark of creation is the same God who has now shone that light into the dark corners of our hearts. The speaking never stopped. It came closer.

This is why we write down what He says. A word from God is more solid than the desk this is resting on. If His word made the oceans hold their line, it can hold you through a week that is coming apart. So catch it while you can still hear it, keep it somewhere you will find it again, and walk back to it when the road goes dark. That is the whole practice, and it begins here, on the first page, with a God whose words come true.

To know Him is to trust the One who is doing the speaking. Every word He gives is an invitation to know the Speaker Himself.

The Bible is stitched together with them: promises planted in one book and kept in another, shadows in the old that find their substance in the new, patterns that surface again and again across centuries of writing. Some mornings the lift will be a single verse seen freshly. Some mornings it will be a thread you can suddenly follow across the whole canon. Every morning the aim is the same: to leave you standing in His doxa, His glory, before the day begins.
